I Live With A Picky Eater

I was flipping through Woman's Day today and caught this piece of little known trivia at the bottom of a page:

  • DID YOU KNOW...About 20 percent of people eat a diet composed entirely of just 10 or fewer foods.

It was obvious to me they had met my beautiful but food challenged Daughter. Her diet consists of the following (in small quantities):

  • Cinnamon Graham Crackers
  • Kraft Macaroni and Cheese
  • Top Ramen
  • Oranges
  • Cheese
  • Chocolate/Candy
  • Cheese Crackers
  • Milk
  • Juice

Now since she is but six years old, I do force feed her other foods like meat and vegetables, but left to herself that is what she would eat.

I worry.

Well wouldn't you worry too if that was all your child ate?

My pediatrician assures me that she will not starve to death and that many kids eat this way. I'm not so sure. I have several friends whose children will gladly eat anything put in front of them. One friend has trouble getting hers to quit eating.

Sigh....such is not my fate apparently.

She probably will not starve to death. She has been known to eat broccoli and chicken of her own free will on occasion.

Just the same...

My daughter eats almost the same things. If I didn't push the issue, she wouldn't eat meat. We insist on about 3-4 bites of meat at a meal.

Our pediatrician only gets concerned if a child's weight falls off the growth chart. Daughter's did one time and we bumped her up to full fat milk for awhile. She's 7 and weighs just over 40 lbs.

Thanks for visiting my blog! :)

One of my friends, growing up, was a seriously picky eater. Her mother was afraid she would "starve," so she would allow her to eat just the same junk food over and over. (Your daughter's list sounds kind of like my friend's.)

Well, thanks to her mom's indulgence, my friend did not starve. However, now that she is an adult, she struggles with weight control, she has not learned to be polite to others regarding the food they are eating/serving (she's not afraid to say "Sick!" or "Yuck!" about what is on my plate!) and she has multiple health problems that are probably diet-related.

And guess what. All those foods that her mom was afraid to give her? She chooses them on her own now. If only her mom had been a *little* more persistent while she was still young!

My point is this: hang in there, and keep being firm with your daughter. It will pay off! :)
